For Editors

OtherWords posts our weekly editorial packages to the Web and emails the text, with hyperlinks, in our newsletter on Mondays. Some editors run our commentaries and cartoons right away, while many others publish or post them weeks later, so we strive to make our work both timely and evergreen. Our commentaries and cartoons are available free of charge. Please cite OtherWords and the author's name if you run our work.
We license our content through Creative Commons, using an " Attribution-No Derivatives Work" license. This allows others to share the content, but requires attribution and does not allow for derivative works (others may not alter, transform, or build upon the work). We believe this protects the interests of our writers while allowing for the maximum flexibility in distributing content.
We adhere to AP style with a few exceptions. If you have any concerns or questions about our editorial practices, please let us know at otherwords@ips-dc.org. We're always happy to hear from you.
Tips for using this website:
- Cartoons
To view a cartoon in the size you'll probably need for publication, right-click on the image and select "open in new tab." Pull the image from there. - Photos
To get a high-resolution photo, click on the photo to get to the contributor's page. There, at the bottom of the left-hand column, you'll see a link to a "hi-res portrait." Click on it. If you don't see a photo of a contributor, that means we don't have one. - Word Count
Our website automatically generates a word count for every op-ed and column. It's close to, but not the same as, the count you'll get in Microsoft Word. The difference is typically less than 20 words. You'll find the count at the top of the commentary, after the date. - Printing
If you'd like to print from our site, use the text-sizing tool in the upper right-hand corner of most pages and adjust it to a larger size font than you need for reading our work on your computer screen. Otherwise, the font will be tiny.
